Vaguthu Galaa- Sundial
The Sundial, known locally as"Vaguthu Gala," translates to "Time Stone" in English. It operates using the sun to indicate time during the day. While timekeeping was not as crucial in the past due to the lack of time-bound activities, after the Maldives embraced Islam in 1147, Sundials played a crucial role in helping people know the prayer times, which occur five times a day. The person responsible for keeping time on each island also led the prayers as a "Mudhim."
The exact age of the sundial inNilandhoo is uncertain. Although the 2004 tsunami caused significant damage to the surrounding walls of the mosque, the sundial remained intact and well-preserved by the community, despite having some removable parts now.
This preservation demonstrates the care and respect the community has for the sundial, highlighting the importance of punctuality.
Today you can visit Masjidul Baduru, the island’s oldest mosque is known as "Hukuru Miskiyy" to experience the ancient history of Gaafu Alifu Nilandhoo.
